Just a quick little post today to share with you a lovely cafe I’ve just been introduced to.
Being a lady of leisure (of sorts) at the moment I’ve been lucky enough to be able to brunch two days in a row. Today, after a quick doctor’s appointment, Matt and I popped into a wonderful little cafe called Balmains in Brighton.
If you’re in the Brighton area, I’d strongly recommend a visit to this fairly new, very cosy cafe. The coffee, chia lattes and tea were superb and the food is both simple and simply delicious.
The decor is subtly bohemian, and very comfortable. There’s just the right amount of tables in the space, so it’s really easy to relax over a coffee and some yum breakfast. The staff were really friendly and attentive.
I’d say that real care has been taken in the design of their menu, and in the sourcing of produce. The menu is pretty small, but still offers a good range of breakfast and lunch fare (I almost skipped straight to lunch the sandwiches looked so good) and this smart offering would seem to allow for only the best ingredients to be used. Matt swore by the poached eggs yesterday, and went back for more today. I had a basic croissant with ham and cheese this morning, and was really impressed – it was fresh and beautifully flavoured.
In my opinion a cafe is so often let down by its simplest dish…if you can’t get the basics right, what’s the point? Equally though, if a place can make a simple dish stand-out as spectacular, they’re really on a good thing. Balmains really seems to have this down, to their credit.
If you’re in the area, you’ll find Balmains on the corner of Arthur Avenue and Were Street, Brighton (Victoria). They’ve got a coffee window too, if you’re just passing through.
